1. Mercy Corps
![]() This is my first love. And the one charity I recommend the most because of its stellar money to program ratio. If you ask me where to give your money and know it will get to the right people, do it here.
Co-founded by Dan O'Neil and Pat Boone. I had a small part in its beginning, helping to raise the seed money for the launch, hosting a dinner in Washington, its first fundraiser, arranging for Pat Boone to appear on a television show and getting permission for him to flash the address, helping to create its initial mailing list and finally serving on its first board of directors. Since those humble beginnings as an NGO calling itself Save the Refugees it re-named itself Mercy Corps and with the team of Dan O'Neil and veteran relief worker, Els Culver, took its work to another level. Since those days MC had become a giant that transcends its humble origins. Under Landrum Boling it became a major player in the world of famine relief. And under the talented leadership of Neil Keny Guyer, MC emerged as one of the world's most important charities. Everybody now looks to even greater work with, Nancy Lindborg, the new president and a powerhouse in her own right. Donate to Mercy Corps
